Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, known simply as Michelangelo, was undoubtedly one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. He was born in 1475 in the small town of Caprese, Tuscany, and showed an aptitude for art at a young age. At only 13 years old, he began to study under the renowned artist Domenico Ghirlandaio.
The Early Years of Michelangelo
